On a lovely sunny afternoon the Huntingtower football team travelled to Corby Glen to play in the cup semi-final. It was not going to be an easy game for the team but through some excellent team work, good communication and some good passing between the players throughout the match the final score was 2-1 to Huntingtower. With the final whistle going and after a testing game the team are now through to the final. The following Year 5 and 6 players took part: Piotrek, Jakub, Billy, Max, Harry, Sammy, Fyn, Georgia and Caitlin.

Shingles - High risk groups

We have recently had a case of shingles in school and therefore would advise if you are in a high-risk group, for example, if you are pregnant or you have a weakened immune system, a blood test may be recommended if there is a possibility that you may have been in close contact with someone who is known to have the infection.

NSPCC Visit

A tremendous success! Your support and generosity with this extremely worthwhile fund-raising event has been overwhelming. The total raised is £2,824.33. Thank you for your support. As you may or may not know, the NSPCC is inspired by a belief that we can all make a difference for all children. That’s why they aim to end cruelty to children in the UK. Even if it takes many generations to realise it, they achieve much more for children by having this inspirational vision.

During May Mrs Cann and Mrs Gudgeon held their first and second Let’s Get Cooking sessions of this term with the following children: Ellie, Jak, Kieran and Taleecha. Attendance

Despite promoting and rewarding regular and sustained attendance in school, last week’s attendance percentage was only 93.12%. This is far below our acceptable percentage level and also the National levels. As previously explained, low attendance at school has a huge detrimental effect on a child’s learning. We are expecting a visit from the Education Welfare Office next week and our concerns will be raised with them and they in turn will be getting actively involved with low attendees.

South Site

Again, it has come to our attention that, before school, children are playing on the South site and on the equipment there. This contravenes Health and Safety guidance and school cannot be responsible for children before 8.50am. We understand that younger children are also playing behind the bike shelter in the KS2 playground.

Huntingtower 'Tackle' The Grantham Rugby Festival

Last week 11 players went to the Kesteven Rugby Club to participate in the Grantham Area Schools Rugby Festival. They had a fantastic time and were a real credit to the school. Many tries were scores by our team and we managed to beat Isaac Newton: a bit of local rivalry. Well done and thank you to all of the children involved.

High 5 Netball Festival - Years 5/6

Well done to the children who took part in the High 5 Netball Festival and finished a brilliant 8th place - especially as this was only their second time playing netball. Max Jappy, Leah Griffiths, Harry Edwards, Fyn Chappell, Katie Bevan, Jessica-Leigh Tamplin and Elle Booton represented the school in the festival which involved 15 schools from all over Grantham and the local area.

NSPCC School Visit

Val Footitt, from the NSPCC came into school the other day and launched a sponsored event in which we are participating. The children have all been given a challenge around keeping fit. She will return next week to ensure that the children achieve their challenge and it fits very nicely with our healthy school theme. Please can you remind the children that they are only to seek sponsorship from people that they know and not to knock on strangers' doors.

Newton's Easter Success

RAF ”FLY” IN TO SUPPORT THE SCHOOL

Members of the University Air Squadron dropped into Huntingtower to help us out. It was part of the Easter flight training camp held at Cranwell each year. Unfortunately, they were grounded and unable to fly but were able to do some much-needed work for the school.

Organised by Flight Lieutenant Chris Haywood, the team helped Mr MacKinnon construct a handrail for our ramped access to Key Stage 1. This ensures a greater degree of safety for children and disabled people. We are extremely grateful for their support and l am sure you will join us in extending our thanks to them.

KEY STEPS GYMNASTICS

Last Friday afternoon saw 4 children from Year 2 take part in their first schools gymnastic competition. They all performed incredibly well, each earning 2 star badges. After school, the Year 3/4 children went along

for their event. Again they did a fantastic job. As a team they achieved 3rd place. We are extremely proud of how well all the children did.
Also thanks go to Elle and Jess who were supportive coaches during the event.

Swimming Gala

On Wednesday, 20^th March, a group of strong swimmers, ranging from Year 3 to Year 6, went to the Mere’s Leisure Centre to take part in the 2013 Swimming Gala. There were 20 races and there was a child from Huntingtower in every race. We came 5^th overall out of the 8 schools taking part, so to everyone who went WELL DONE!! By Sheena – Class Lions

What a fantastic event we had on Tuesday evening. Boys and men got mucky developing the grounds and enhancing the curriculum. Led by Mr Turner, over 15 children with their male role model dug, sawed, hammered, clipped, swept and made a fantastic Anderson shelter. This fits brilliantly with our World War II theme in Key Stage 2. We are very grateful, once again, to the PTFA for giving school the monies raised by them to buy the Anderson shelter.

Grantham schools gymnastics competition at Grantham Meres

On Sunday 10th March, 20 children from Key Stage 2 took part in a gym competition. The children had been working incredibly hard before school to perfect the moves for the set routines.
This year we had the largest number of children taking part, for many of whom, this was the first competition they have taken part in. I was extremely proud of all of the children who participated. We took 4 teams, this year and had success with the under 11 team A, who came 2nd. We also had individual success with Jessica Tamplin coming 3rd for under 11. In the advanced competition we had 2 girls. We were extremely proud of the additional work these girls had to do. In this competition, Elle Booton came 2nd, with Lottie Mears coming in 1st. I am extremely proud of how each individual has improved their personal technique and look forward to another fabulous year with Gymnastics in 2014.

On Monday, 18^th March, the Year 5/6 dancers went to the Mere’s Leisure Centre to take part in the Rock Challenge. We also sold 80 tickets. When we arrived we got to watch the rehearsals. I think most of us thought the Secondary Schools were amazing. Even though we were there all day, we all had big smiles on our faces every minute. We enjoyed performing to the other schools and our family and friends, and felt like we were winners. It was a great opportunity to be a part of the Rock Challenge and we are hoping more people do it in 2014. Unfortunately, the 2013 Year 6 children will not be able to do it with our school next year, but the Year 5s will. The Rock Challenge is one of the best things you can take part in and, if you ever take part in it, I’m sure you will remember it for a long time.

Very Important Safety Notice

We open the school gates at 8.45am to ensure your child is safe and not on the narrow paths around school. However, we have always made it clear that our staff are not available to take supervision of the children until they come out to collect them. It has come to my attention that some children are arriving early, hanging around outside of school and then, when the gates are opened, playing games on the playground and going onto the south site. Firstly, you are responsible for the well-being of your child before school and they should not be arriving on their own before 8.50am. Secondly, there is no need for any child to go onto the south site. Please ensure your child has this message and we will do our part to communicate it.

Headlice

We have unfortunately had a few instances of headlice in school recently. Please check the childrens hair daily looking for small grey insects or their eggs. They can be treated with a special comb available at chemists or special shampoos.

On Wednesday 13^th March, a group of sporty children (Elle, Jess, Max, Leah, Harry and Fyn) went on a trip to Walton Girls’ High School to play netball! We played against two teams. The first team we played against was Ropsley, then we played Marston. We played each school twice, the first time we played Ropsley we won 1-0, but when we played the next round we happened to win 2-0! When we had a game with Marston we lost 1-0, but when we played the second half we happened to draw 1-1! But we had an EPIC time!

Newton the Easter Bunny has been busy preparing for this year’s street parade. Last year he was very successful in helping others, The Kingfisher Ward at Grantham Hospital and St Barnabas Hospice both received a cheque for £1000, putting smiles onto the faces of those less fortunate than ourselves.

This year the School Council has chosen Grantham Children’s Deafness Society and Grantham Food Bank. To make this event as successful as last year, we need some helpers. Easter eggs come in all shapes and sizes and so can you. Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Godparents, Friends, Mums, Dads and your children are welcome accompanied too. Newton will be parading through the streets on Sunday 24th through to Wednesday 27^th March (inc). If you can help us, please sign up by popping into the school office and leaving your name and contact details. Easter is the only time of year when it is perfectly safe to put all your eggs in one basket! So please give some time even if it’s just an hour to help those less fortunate than ourselves and let’s give some people a very Happy Easter!

COLSTERWORTH CHOIR FESTIVAL

On Friday 1^st March, members of KS1 and KS2 choir went to the Mere’s Leisure Centre to perform. We all did fantastically well with the results of 1^st place trophy in KS2 and another 1^st place trophy from KS1 ! Everyone was very proud especially the teachers! Kangaroos and Koalas visit to Great Wood Farm Environmental Education Centre

All this week, Classes Koalas and Kangaroos have visited Great Wood Farm Education Centre. After arriving at Base Camp on a tractor we were given our missions including; rescuing Sage the puppet from a tree; making magic potions for Percy the squirrel and collecting fire wood, so we could cook our lunch. We climbed trees, played on a woodland swing and helped build the fire. We walked to a thicker part of the forest and built dens using the woodlands as a resource. Some of the children were lucky enough to see some sheep and a lamb being born! Mrs Kightley thought it was the best trip ever!!!

Food 4 Thought would like to reassure parents that our meats are not affected by the recent discovery. Meat products used on our menus are sourced from within the UK, the vast majority of which from within Lincolnshire. All of these products meet the Red Tractor Assured Food Standards criteria as a welfare minimum.

Late Arrival At School

The school day starts at 8:50 am, school doors are shut at 9.00 am. Lateness is classed as any child coming into school after 9.10 am. All children arriving after 9.00 am must report to the office and their name will be placed in the Late Book. After 9.25am it is classed as an unauthorised absence.

We monitor lateness on a monthly basis. Where children have persistent lateness problems, the Head Teacher will invite the parents into school to discuss the situation. The school target is for 99% punctuality
